Antonio Chaurand

Born in 1989 in Celaya, Mexico, Antonio Chaurand has never let himself be limited by a single medium. While he found success with naturalistic oil paintings of the arid high desert surrounding his home town in central Mexico, he has continued to explore both societal themes and types of painting.

The full range of his mastery is on view in the current exhibition. The oil paintings of cacti and tropical plants are dreamlike in their execution but so realistic as to provoke nostalgia, and these are juxtaposed with his recent monochromatic woodcut prints. His series of miniature watercolor sketches were all made from the backseat of a car during his trips in the countryside around Mexico City, and serve as a visual notebook of his travels.

He has been the recipient of a number of awards, including the Young Creators of Mexico National FONCA/CONACULTA scholarships in 2014, 2016, and 2019 showcasing his continuous evolution as an artist. He has been selected in a number of prestigious art competitions including the Pedro Coronel Painting Biennial, José Atanasio Monroy Biennial, Lumen Parameter Biennial, Yucatan Visual Arts Biennial, Julio Castillo Biennial, Alfredo Zalce Biennial, and Rubén Herrera Self-Portrait Biennial, among others. Chaurand’s career includes eight solo exhibitions and over fifty collective exhibitions in Mexico, the United States, and Europe.

He earned his Bachelor of Visual Arts at the Allende Institute, part of the University of Guanajuato, from 2008 to 2012, and currently resides in Mexico City.
