Margarette Dawit

Margarette Dawit, born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1953, is a painter whose life and artistic career stand as a testament to her unwavering dedication to her craft and her unique approach to the art world.

What sets Dawit apart is her steadfast focus. With no website, computer, or cell phone, she remains disconnected from ubiquitous modern distractions. Instead, her sole ambition is to create art and to produce new, different, and better works. Her success is a testament to the power of artistic purity and the enduring appeal of creating art for art’s sake. She exists on her own terms, outside the fast-paced digital world that defines our time.

With 38 individual exhibitions to her name, Dawit’s work is prolific and consistently evolving. Her creative output showcases her ability to continually push the boundaries and resist the temptation to repeat herself.

In addition to her solo exhibitions, Dawit has participated in 27 group exhibitions. In October 2004 she was chosen as the Guest of Honour to represent the Republic of South Africa at the International Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato, Mexico. The same year, she was selected as an artist for the Rufino Tamayo Biennial. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago.

She moved to San Miguel de Allende in 1988, and has become a beloved fixture of the small colonial town, where she is regarded as one of the most influential and talented members of the renowned art community.
