Miguel Ángel Garrido

Born in Mexico City in 1982, Miguel Ángel Garrido’s artistic career has been characterized by his restless and daring nature. From an early age he showed a keen interest in cinema, which he initially pursued. However this wasn’t his sole passion, and subsequent studies in literature, philosophy, history, and psychology have all influenced his work as a painter.

His work in this exhibition explores his longstanding interest in cinema, though ultimately it confirms that in his hands a painting can show more than a moving image.

While his work never shies from addressing political and sometimes morally scandalous themes, he doesn’t advocate a specific political stance. He maintains a certain distance from his work, acting as an objective observer. However aesthetically his investment is clear, and he never wavers from his principles.

His body of pictorial work is extensive, and reflects significant Cubist and Impressionist influences, to which he adds his personal touch. Sometimes this touch veers toward stark realism with an ironic perspective, while at other times it delves into pure imagination.

Miguel has twice been a recipient of the Young Creators program from the National Fund for Culture and the Arts (FONCA) of Mexico and has received an Honorable Mention in the IV Pedro Coronel Biennial. He studied Fine Arts at the Allende Institute in San Miguel de Allende, in Mexico.
